Late autumn fayre

A few days on the coast at Buckton produced typical late autumn birds with 31 Whooper Swans, a pair of Black Redstarts, 8 Lapland Buntings, a Hooded Crow and a smart male Snow Bunting. Dave and I managed to catch and ring the Snow Bunt by walking it in to a net on the cliff top. The bird was aged as a 1st winter male and of the Icelandic race insulae. The bottom pic is one of the two Olive -backed Pipits at Filey, this individual only having one eye.

Five stripes

The five different Yellow-browed Warblers we managed to find at Buckton over the past four days with three being ringed. Other migrants included a Short-eared Owl, two Jack Snipe, two Willow Warblers, five Blackcap, a Woodcock and a good influx of thrushes (55 Blackbird ringed).

Bluetail landing

This first winter female Red-flanked Bluetail at South Landing was the second individual to be caught at Flamborough in the past few days, well done Jim and Ian. The male Sparrowhawk was being processed at the same time and the Woodcock was from Buckton today.
